The Vancouver Skate Plaza, also known as The Vancouver Skate Plaza, is a renowned skatepark situated beneath the Georgia Street and Dunsmuir viaducts at the intersection of Union St. and Quebec St. in Vancouver, British Columbia. Established in 2004, it holds the distinction of being the first street plaza skatepark in the city. Designed to emulate the urban plazas commonly found in downtown cores worldwide, the park features elements such as handrails, ledges, and stairs, offering skaters a dynamic and authentic street-style skateboarding experience. Spanning an area of 26,000 square feet, the Vancouver Skate Plaza is open for free public use and serves as a vibrant hub for skate culture in the city.
Developed in collaboration with the Vancouver Skate Coalition, the Vancouver Police Service, and local community members, the park's design reflects a commitment to urban form, budget optimization, accessibility, and safety. Its success has garnered international recognition, with Complex magazine ranking it as number 21 on its list of the world's best skate parks in August 2013. The project received a Regional Honour Award from the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects in 2005, underscoring its positive impact on the community and its significance as a model for youth park development in urban renewal areas.
This street-style skateboard park underwent a recent upgrade in 2011 and remains a popular destination for advanced skateboarders seeking a challenging environment to showcase their skills. The covered 2,000 square meter (21,500 square foot) site is meticulously designed with various skateable elements, including replica rails, embankments, curbs, walls, ramps, and steps. The plaza's surface textures, ranging from exposed aggregate and brick to concrete, granite, and steel, contribute to its dynamic and versatile terrain. During the summer months, the skatepark offers the assistance of a skate host for minor maintenance, skate park etiquette guidance, and first aid, enhancing the overall skateboarding experience and ensuring a safe environment for all participants.
The Vancouver Skate Plaza operates 24/7, providing skateboarders with round-the-clock access to its facilities. Parking options are available, albeit limited, with metered parking located on the south side of Union St. Since its inception in 2004 as a temporary youth facility by the Vancouver Parks Board, the skate plaza has evolved into a cornerstone of the city's skateboarding community.
