Mike Fox Skate Park aka Ken Wormhoudt Skate Park
299 San Lorenzo Blvd, Santa Cruz, CA 95060, USA
The Ken Wormhoudt Skate Park at Mike Fox Park, situated along the scenic San Lorenzo River, is a premier concrete skate park that offers many thrilling features, including a full pipe, two bowls, a street course with steps, hubba ledges, wall rides, and metal rails. The park, spanning 15,000 square feet, stands as a must-visit destination for both local skaters and enthusiasts from the broader region.
Open daily from 9 am to 7 pm, this skate park requires users to adhere to safety regulations, including the mandatory use of helmets and safety gear. The facility provides a and challenging environment that caters to skaters of all levels, attracting both newcomers and seasoned shredders. Designed by local legend Zach Wormhoudt, who has contributed to over 100 skatepark designs worldwide, the park comes with a rich history.
Before its grand opening, the park’s location at Mike Fox Park saw limited use, but the addition of the $1.3 million skatepark transformed it into a bustling hub for skaters. The park’s picturesque setting along the San Lorenzo River contributes to its popularity. The park owes its name to Zach Wormhoudt’s father, Ken, a skateboarding pioneer who designed and built the world’s first public skate park, Derby Park, in Santa Cruz County in 1974.
Zach took charge of the Mike Fox Park project and faced significant challenges in constructing the standout feature – a 16-foot-tall full pipe, designed to mimic an ocean wave. Beyond the full pipe, the park offers meticulously maintained bowls and a variety of street skating features, solidifying its status as a top-tier skateboarding destination.
Skaters, including visitors from as far as Europe, flock to downtown Santa Cruz to experience the thrill of riding the park’s rails, bowls, stairs, and conquer the notable full pipe – the first of its kind in Northern California. The facility’s popularity is a testament to its engineering brilliance, artistic design, and the legacy of the Wormhoudt family in shaping the skateboarding culture. Conveniently located with a nearby parking area, the Ken Wormhoudt Skate Park is free to use. It makes it an accessible and vibrant hub for the skateboarding community. Protective gear is highly recommended for all skaters.
