Point Loma High School gained recognition in the skateboarding community for the notorious “Leap of Faith” drop, situated on the school premises. This daring drop involved a 14-foot, 3-inch descent over 27 stairs, requiring skaters to approach with an ollie over a railing. Professional skateboarder Jamie Thomas achieved fame through his attempt, landing safely but breaking his board. Other skateboarders and rollerbladers, including Richard King, Ian Brown, Brian Shima, and Chris Haffey, also tried the feat, resulting in injuries and broken bones.

The PLHS Leap of Faith gained further prominence in skateboarding video games like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 and Tony Hawk’s Underground, featuring as a challenging level. In response to safety concerns, an elevator was installed at the site in 2005 to restrict access by skateboarders.

The spot is open at any time, and the use of protective pads is required. Admission is free.
