Greensburg Skatepark, Greensburg Indiana
Decatur County Parks & Recreation, 402 E North St, Greensburg, IN 47240, USA
The crazy language being heard on the streets of Greensburg, which includes words like ollie, mongo, doh doh’s, goofy-foot, crooked grind, fakie, handplant and nollie, are all just part of the way skateboarders talk to each other. With just made Skate Park, by the fairgrounds, now open for business it may just be easier to learn the vernacular than risk losing the respect of area children forever.
The skate park was officially opened for the first time Saturday morning and after a small amount words were shared by local government officials, all in plain to understand English, to security gates flew open and dozens of skaters, roller bladers and BMXers took to doing what they like best. Impressing on lookers with their skateboard tricks.
This park definitely has the best stuff, said seven-year-old Nick Wilson. It has half pipes, rails, spinal transfers and everything you need to do a whole bunch of skateboard tricks.
Nick’s older brother Conor couldn’t agree more. Of all the skate parks I’ve been to this is easily the best, the 12 year old said. There is a lot of equipment to go on. It was really definitely well worth every penny the wait.
That wait may have been even longer than the boarders understand. Talk of a skate park for the area has been rumbling around for several years and it took a predicted spending budget of $107,000 to finally get it done.
It was four or five years ago when we were first professional about building a skate park, said Howard Wilkison, president of the Decatur County Park BoaRoad. We wondered back then if there was enough local interest to warrant one. Now it’s obvious, with all of the young people here today, there is enough interest and this was a great idea.
The awesome skate park came mainly from 1st Federal Bank which donated $75,000. The city of Greensburg contributed another $25,000 and the Decatur County community Foundation pitched in the final $7,000.
