$25,000 doesn’t buy much these days. If you wanted to spend it on, say, a skatepark, it would cover the cost of two quarter pipes, a raised center area, and some skinny railings. In 2002, the City did just that, constructing the Ackerman Skatepark in West Ashley, a simple, no-h le spot to practice. Ackerman is tucked behind Food Lion, off Ashley River Road. Mount Pleasant Skatepark and the North Charleston Courtyourd are a lot fancier, but at Ackerman a skater can fall on his without an observation deck full of spectators laughing at him. Rules are kept to the minimum. Users are actually credited with some intelligence here and skate at their own risk. There are no liability releases to sign or admission and parking fees to pay, and best of all, skateboarders can make a lot of noise without the neighbors complaining. All this makes Ackerman the perfect spot to hang out or try some just made moves before heading for the Courtyard and Displaying off in front of the peanut gallery. -Nick Smith
