I've spent basically my entire life skateboarding. I started when I was just 5 years old with an ATM board, Independent trucks, Spitfire wheels, and Bones Red bearings. From that moment on I was hooked. I haven't stopped skateboarding for more than 3 months at a time in my almost 25 years of skating. It has been one of the few constants in my life, as well as one of the greatest teachers I've ever had. When I was 15 I won a local competition here in Gilroy, and I've spent my years experimenting with all sorts of different styles of skating, and different types of set-ups, and at almost 29 I have transitioned into specializing in transition. While I might not be hucking myself down drops or hitting rails these days, I still know enough about skateboarding and have the experience to help others learn difficult tricks on tougher terrains.
Beyond this, I've been teaching and mentoring others at the Gilroy Skatepark since I was about 14. I've taken it upon myself to lift others up and use my experience both on and off the board to help raise a generation of local skaters who rip on a board and who strive for greatness in life. I later even got the opportunity to teach skate lessons for the City of Morgan Hill and made it into their paper. The experiences of teaching and mentoring these young men are what I'm most proud of and thankful for in my life.
This mentorship at the skatepark then led me to a career in teaching. I've done after-school, extended learning care, curriculum writing, program management, program creation, created and led training for others in these areas, and so much more in my time with the YMCA, Elevo, and the City of Gilroy. On top of all of this, I'm currently in school, 1 year away from my Bachelors's in Communications at CSUMB, and plan to pursue my Master's right after in order to become a professor and further my career and passion for teaching.
